Beauty Steal

My new favorite beauty product is under $3!

I'm a drug store beauty hoarder, I'll admit it. Spending $30 on bronzer isn't exactly in the books on a budget like mine. I am always on the look out for cheap beauty deals to incorporate into my daily routine.

My new savior is e.l.f. lip balm! This $3 matte lip balm is the perfect nude lip color, and with an undertone of peppermint, leaves your lips feeling tingly and smooth.

What beauty steals can't you live without?

The Shoe That Changed My Life

It was 1999; I recently received a pair of shoes that would lead me on an unexpected journey to my career. They weren’t particularly special, a pair of plain black leather Diba booties with a chunky heel and a square toe. Just shy of age of 11, I had been gifted with my first pair of big girl heels.

My dad had taken a warehouse position with a local shoe company. This was nothing of too much interest to me, as I was more interested in hiding my crush on the neighbor boy and playing tag with the kids on the block. I was a tomboy and fashion was a foreign subject to me. As the years rolled by, I dreamed of travel and college and kept my nose to the books. As dances and formal events began to take up much of my time, the perk of free shoes from daddy began to gain some appeal.

The summer after my junior year of high school, my pockets were empty; I was in need of a job. The shoe company was looking for some help around the office to help them prepare for a move to a new building.  My summer job became a part-time job and 8 years later, my full time career.

Through my tenure of high school and college, my friends began to come to me for fashion advice and a great shoe discount. My Payless shoes and sneakers were replaced by riding boots and stilettos and a love for fashion began. Since the age of 17, I have never purchased another shoe brand and I have stumbled into a career that I never saw coming.

Do you have an article of clothing that changed your life?

I submitted this essay to Elle Magazine. Fingers crossed that it gets published!

Trend to Watch: Holograph

The holographic trend has been hiding under the radar, but I think we will see it become very popular this fall.

Holograph clothing and accessories are starting to pop up on many of the trend forecasting websites, on celebrities and are gaining traction on social media.

I tried holographic nail art a few months ago and I loved it!

What to you think about all of the holograms? Is this a trend you would try?

The New Face of Heroin

The recent tragic death of Cory Monteith has finally brought media attention to an epidemic that is killing today's young adults in shocking numbers.  As tragic as his death is, it is happening everyday, in every neighborhood around this country, and it is a topic that hits close to home.

Fortunately, I have not experienced first hand the loss of a friend or family member by the tragic disease of heroin addiction, but I have seen its affects.

The people my boyfriend grew up with, his friends, men in their mid to late twenties, are the new face of heroin users. In the last two years, I have witnessed the downfall of friend after friend who started out with recreational abuse of opiate prescriptions, and became full blown junkies. We have attended a funeral and have seen a few struggle going in and out of rehab, losing relationships with friends and family and facing homelessness.

Everyday, my facebook feed shows another person mourning the loss of a loved one to the drug, another relationship broken and every once in a while a glimmer of hope when one out of a thousand reaches a sober milestone.

Heroin addicts don't look like Amy Winehouse or the homeless guy down town.  They look like the kid next-door that was your best friend and it sneaks up on them so fast, they never think that they will become addicted until it is too late.

I am super excited for this season's line. I think it is the best we have done in a long time. Exotic prints, cognac, ink, oxblood and emerald are a staple in the line, along with lots of riding boots and the platform stiletto you know and love!

Building a Brand

Have you ever thought about creating your own business or brand?

We are in the middle of creating a new line at work and one of my interns commented that she couldn't believe that we just had an hour long meeting about a box....this was months into our process of developing the box, just one of many meetings. It got me thinking about how much really goes into creating a brand identity.

Our new brand journey began a little less than a year ago when we had the idea to move forward with this new shoe line. We went about the process a little more backwards than one normally would, because we wanted to create a lifestyle, then the product to fit.

At our big shoe show in Las Vegas, we walked the isles and isles of endless amounts of shoes and then walked Magic, where the apparel companies show. We noticed that there was a huge void in this particular category of shoes, where the fashion had progressed, but the footwear hadn't. This began our concept.

We wanted a cool, hip, fashionable men's line. The men's footwear business is boring. Unless you buy sneakers every single brand looks almost exactly the same. If men wanted fashion shoes, they were wearing Nike and Reebok etc. not grown up men's wear. We wanted to build a line where a grown man could easily express his style but be able to go from work to play in the same pair of shoes.

When we got back to St. Louis, we had a meeting to talk about what our plan was. We decided on a name and a color scheme. Do you know how much work it takes to get 10 people with completely different opinions and ages and style to get on the same page?! Over a period of 6 months we saw new logo designs and color combos come in and out of our door.

The next step was the box. Another 3 months of deliberation about color, thickness, box shape, design etc were mulled over.  At the same time we tried to identify our target consumer. How old is he, what does he wear, where does he work, who does he hang out with, is he white, black, gay, asian... there are so many potential people who could wear this brand, and we have to hit all of them, or we will lose them forever.

Then we had to create the product. How different can we be, but still be able to sell to the mass market? What styles are men willing to buy? Men buy shoes differently than women, how can we create a fashion that will last for a long period of time?

From here we have to decide how to roll our our launch. Are we buying product up front or taking orders before the buy? How are we going to reach new customers? What is our tradeshow booth going to look like? What should store displays look like?  How do we design our product going forward so that it stays new and interesting to our target market?

A brand launch is one thing, but keeping true to your brand mission and target market is a life long endeavor and is much more work than you could imagine, and we are getting ready to take our first big step into the real retail world.

Have you ever thought about creating your own brand? What was your experience like?

Ahhh....Summer Vacation

I just returned to my regular work week today, after 8 wonderful days of sunshine and beach.

Last Friday, I set out on a 15 hour drive with my boyfriend's family to Florida. We stopped for the evening in my birthplace of Jacksonville. Growing up, my mom always pointed out to my brothers the hospitals where they were born. In my 25 years of life, I've never been able to see that place since I left it. It was super exciting to me to see the signs for NAS Jacksonville and the long bridge that my mom told me used to freak her out, and put my toes in the sand in the same beach that I did at just a week old.

Saturday morning I woke up super early to catch a sunrise before we left for our final destination:

Saturday afternoon, we headed out for the final 3 hour journey to Indiatlantic.
Indiatlantic is a small town, just outside of Melbourne that is known for its beautiful beaches and sea turtles. Though I didn't see any, June and July are nesting season and the turtles can be seen all over the beaches. Orlando is about 45 minutes away, but this little city seems to be nestled away and there weren't too many tourists on the beach.

I spent most of my days on the beach. We took a few tours of some surf shops and went out to dinner a few times, but boogie boarding and suntanning were just what the doctor called for in my book.

We went to dinner at a restaurant called Squid Lips, that was good, but not amazing. But there was a fun little pier that we walked down after for some photos.

We also found this little gem where you could eat just off the beach  called the Beachside Cafe. The intro image is from the balcony where we sat at lunch for 2 days. I had some appetizers one day and the chicken wrap the next. The chicken wrap was DELICIOUS and everyone else left completely satisfied as well. I took a bite of Ricky's lobster Ruben which was to die for. I will definitely visit Beachside on our next visit. We had our goodbye dinner at Petrillos Italian Eatery the Friday before we left. The food here was great too. Ricky and I chose a few pizzas to try out.

4th of July Ricky and I sat out on the beach all day, while the rest of the family went for an airboat ride. That evening we sat on the beach and watched fireworks being shot off in every direction as far as our eyes could see.

Besides a little sun poisoning, this was a much needed vacation and I can't wait to go back!

Guest Post: Lucinda Bounsall from Farfetch.com--Ten Shoes Every Girl Should Own

The Essential Shoes: Ten shoes that every girl should own

When I was younger I never really knew what the big deal was with shoes, they were simply for warmth and practicality. I was happy to throw on whatever my mum picked out for me at Clarks and get on with the important business of playing outdoors. I would never have considered myself one of those girls preoccupied with something as trivial as shoes; for me it was all about good value and a decent sole for climbing trees.

But has something happened to me over the years, I’ve become one of those very girls and I’m not ashamed to admit it. I love shoes, there’s something inside of me that means every time I see a beautiful pair of heels I can’t stop myself from reaching for the credit card as if possessed. The thing is; shoes really can make an outfit, even if you’re wearing an ensemble completely bought from Primark you can still make it look more like Prada with the right pair of shoes, they can make or break a look.

As tempting as it can be to stock pile sky scraper designer heels and sequined sandals it’s probably not the shrewdest investment and there comes a point in even the strongest relationship where your boyfriend is simply not prepared to build you yet another IKEA shoe rack. So to avoid shoe-buyer’s remorse (as if that’s a thing) and to help make sure you never find yourself in that situation where you don’t have the right kicks for your outfit I’ve been exploring some of the most essential shoes around.

Ballet Flats

Ballet pumps aren’t just for dancing in; these bad boys are an absolute essential for almost any look. They’re super versatile and the ideal size to carry around in your bag if you’re planning on dancing into the wee hours. Here are some of our fave ballet flats:
1.    PointedToe Ballet Pump – ASOS - £28 – If Ballet pumps are essential then a black pair is even more so, these cool asymmetric pointed toe pair from ASOS are a perfect addition to any shoe collection.
2.    ‘Kitty’Flat by Charlotte Olympia – farfetch.com - £616 – These amazing red satin flats are embroidered with a cat face and are a sure fire way to add a touch of tongue in cheek chic to any ensemble, wear with anything from a pair of skinnies to a cute tea dress.
3.    LeopardPrint Ballet Pumps – H&M - £8If you’re looking for something budget friendly then these cool leopard print flats are the perfect choice, they’d look great with a pair of turned up boyfriend jeans and even if you only wear them eight times that’s still just a pound per wear!

NUDE PUMPS

Nude pumps are the ultimate leg-lengtheners and are regularly spotted on the red carpet by celebrities such as Swifty; opt for a peep toe style to show off a killer pedicure.
1.     Pigalle120 Patent Nude Pump – Christian Louboutin - £410 – These babies are definitely on the pricier side but that’s what you get when you buy Louboutins! Instantly recognisable by their iconic red soles these patent pumps will go effortlessly with jeans or dressed up with a cocktail dress.
2.     Mid-Heel Pointed Pumps –Zara - £33 – A much more accessible price you simply can’t go wrong with a pair of Zara heels and for £33 it would be sacrilege to not get them! Ideal for work as the mid-heel won’t break your feet!
3.    Odeon Pumps –Conleys.de - £135These round toed nude pumps are great for any special occasion they are a classic style and will smarten up any outfit in an instant. Why not wear them with a light coloured dress to really tie in the colour a la Taylor Swift?

TOP TRAINERS

It’s pretty clear in our opinion that trainers are the run-away success of the season (excuse the pun) so weather you opt for an on-trend pair of running trainers or a perennially stylish pair of wedged sneakers you really can’t go wrong in our books!
1.     Women’sBlack Suede and Canvas Trainers – Ash - £149 –These amazing hidden heel trainers from Ash have been at the top of our wish-list for ages now and don’t seem to be leaving any time soon. The perfect balance of style and casual cool, we just can’t resist!
2.     Free Run Sneakers - Nike -£75 – Designed for running and training you don’t have to have any intention of hitting the gym with these lovelies as they look great for everyday use.
3.     WL574 Trainers – New Balance - £85Add some colour to your footwear collection with a pair of wild trainers from New Balance, play it safe or go for a cool colour blocked style.

ANKLE BOOTS

Whatever your style there is no excuses for not owning a fantastic pair of ankle boots, weather you go for a classic Chelsea style or a heel these are guaranteed to add a little rock and roll vibe to even the dullest outfit. Pair with denim cut-offs like Kate Bosworth or an oversized band tee and black super skinnies for the ultimate word in off-duty cool.
1.     BuckledAnkle Boots – Jeffery Campbell - £175 – These striking Jeffery Campbell buckled boots will add a touch of serious cool to any outfit, why not wear with a feminine tea dress to really change up a look.
2.     CoachellaChelsea Boots - Opening Ceremony – £250You really can’t go wrong with a cool Chelsea boot, if the weather is right these will swiftly become your go-to festival footwear and will go with absolutely everything in your wardrobe!
3.     AtlantaChelsea Ankle Boot – ASOS - £42If you’re looking for something a little different then a pair of heeled ankle boots are the perfect option, smart enough to wear for those special occasion but still nonchalant enough for the after-party.

THE SHOWSTOPPERS

Every shoe closet has at least one pair, those shoes that you bought on a whim with your student loan or the remnants of your overdraft. These are the stand-out pieces of any half decent shoe collections and probably at the pricier end too. However they might not be the best value for money as even though you love them like a child they’re highly impractical, uncomfortable and just generally outrageous; you’ll probably end up only wearing them once a year but hey they’re worth it because after all you can’t help which shoes you fall in love with!
